You are on a Tuesday morning, and your NAS has just put on a red warning. That little box in the hall closet is full of years of family photographs, tax returns, and school assignments. You place an order and begin to refresh your inbox. In case you are a Plus series owner, Synology America has recently declared a quicker, free means through that line. The following is what you get, what you do not get, and what to do next.

Quick Answer: Synology America has declared a new free help tier to those who own Plus series NAS, and higher models, in the U.S. and Canada. It guarantees a four-hour response during weekdays 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific. The free standard help is free to all and the 24/7 coverage is only offered with paid plans.

What Is Synology Advanced Support?

In the middle of September 2026, Synology America proclaimed a reformulated help program. It maintains the normal help that everybody already receives and provides five others on top of them: one of them is free, and the other four are paid ( Source: Synology America press release, via Apple Tech Talk).

The free is targeted towards individuals, home offices, and small businesses. It comes at no extra cost with Plus series NAS models and anything above them in the U.S. and Canada. The next neo+ model is also announced (Source: Apple Tech Talk).

The following is the essence of the promise. Coverage is 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific, 5 days a week and guaranteed four hour response. Weekends and big holidays are not included ( Source: Techaeris).

Timing check: Synology claims that the paid plans are already available, but the free tier will be released later this year. We were unable to ascertain whether it is active as of October 2, 2026. Verify your Synology Account and then trust it.

Get ready before the launch

There is no need to wait and prepare. Even the tiniest of steps now will save time when you really need it:

  • Register your NAS in your Synology Account to have your model and serial number registered.
  • Check dates of warranties. Hardware swaps are subject to warranty and hence be aware of the expiry of your warranty.
  • Upgrade DSM to an up-to-date, stable version. This is frequently requested by engineers.
  • List your setup: drive models, RAID type, and any add-on packages you are dependent on.
  • Ensure that there is a backup that is not solely on the NAS.

Imagine it as storing your cars registration in the glove box. You hope you will never have to use it, but you will be happy that it is there.

Synology Plus Series Benefits: What the Free Upgrade Gets You

The mid-range Synology products, such as DS923+ and DS225+ are called plus models. They are positioned on top of the entry-level J and Value lines and introduce new capabilities like Docker and virtual machines (Source: NAS Compares). On the Synology site, you can view the existing Plus lineup. Comparing models? Our hardware guides tell you what each type of device can best do.

Having no idea about a NAS? It is a sort of home server: a small always-on box that contains your files and provides them to all devices in the house.

The free upgrade will include:

  • A response-time promise. During weekday coverage times, you could have a guaranteed four-hour response.
  • No additional purchases needed. The initial reports are that Plus owners do not have to buy or activate anything (Source: Techaeris).
  • New model day of coverage. The next neo+ comes with the same advantage.
  • Standard help stays. You may continue to use Support Center, chat or phone.

This is what it says it will not promise:

  • 24/7 help. The window is not on nights, weekends or major holidays.
  • Faster hardware swaps. It is not shipping speed, but response times that are discussed in the announcement.
  • A four-hour fix. A resolution time is not a response time. It gauges the initial response, not the last solution.

One more caveat. The text indicates that the coverage is all Plus series devices, but the coverage we looked at does not describe what happens to older or out-of-warranty equipment. Find such details when the program becomes operational.

Who benefits most

The free version can be the most useful in several typical scenarios:

  • Remote employees with project files in a Plus NAS, and who cannot afford to wait a long time before a response.
  • Families that keep years of photos and video in a single device.
  • Small offices with few users who share files, but do not have a full-time IT specialist.
  • Home lab hobbyists who spin up containers or virtual machines who encounter difficult configuration issues.

When you simply make some light backups on a NAS, you might not see the difference. A real comfort is a sure first answer, should you lean on it day by day.

Is Synology Support Free? What Costs Nothing and What Doesn't

Yes, mostly, to the home user. Here is the split.

Free:

  • Customer support to all customers in North and South America, either via Support Center, chat, or phone (Source: Apple Tech Talk).
  • The new Plus series owners and more in the U.S. and Canada have a new weekday level.

Paid:

  • Four Response plans, bought per device. They range between entry-level and enterprise (Source: Synology America press release, via Business Wire).

In the coverage we looked at, no prices were listed. Response plans are purchased individually device, similar to the older Premium Support licenses, which lasted one to five years (Source: Synology Premium Support Guide). The current number store by Check Synology.

Read the small print on hardware, as well. The older program only offered replacement service to devices that are still under warranty or those that are registered in Extended Warranty Plus (Source: Synology Premium Support Guide). Paid plan purchases expedited assistance. It doesn't revive an expired warranty.

A basic concept of cost is here. Free has a response guarantee, free of charge, and the paid plans have additional hours and faster hardware choices. The coverage on nights and weekends is what you are paying, not the right to ask questions.

Synology Support Tiers 2026: The Full Ladder at a Glance

There are now six levels of help provided by Synology. They are placed in the table below ( Source: Apple Tech Talk; Business Wire).

Synology Response Basic vs Priority: Is a Paid Plan Worth It?

Both the plans provide 24-hour assistance and four hour response first. Hardware failure is what occurs when the difference occurs. Basic has ground shipping as standard warranty replacement, whereas Priority has advanced hardware replacement (Source: Business Wire).

The new name of Premium Support is Priority, and current customers retain their current terms. It is only sold in the U.S. The one that is open to everyday owners in the U.S. and Canada is basic.

When Response Basic makes sense

Think about it when you have a J, Value, or Bee model, as the free level does not include them. It is also applicable to Plus owners who require assistance during the weekends and on the night. Consider a home business, a camera system or archives of a photographer.

New to the game? Even our novice installations will reduce the chance of you requiring assistance at all.

When Response Priority makes sense

Think about it when a dead NAS causes people to be unable to work and you cannot have a replacement ship. The question is easy to answer: is an hour of downtime more expensive to you than the plan? In case the answer is yes, the upgrade will be self-paying.

Our verdict: to the vast majority of home users, the free version and a tested backup is better than the 24/7 coverage. Before spending money on a service plan, spend the additional money on a second drive.

How to Contact Synology Support (and Get Answers Faster)

Updating MikroTik RouterOS to version 7.24 through the router's admin panel

To open a ticket follow these steps:

  1. Log in with your Synology Account. You need it to start a ticket from DSM (Source: Synology Knowledge Center).
  2. In DSM, open Support Center, and select Contact Support.
  3. Complete all the necessary fields. Missing fields may halt your request.
  4. Watch your email. The tickets are assigned a unique ID which is displayed in the subject line of every reply.

Prefer a person? On the Contact Us page, Synology provides the phone and live chat options in the technical assistance section.

Heads up: engineers might request you to enable remote access so that they can inspect your system. This is usual, though you had better go through our security checklist first, and turn the access off when the case is closed.

What to put in your ticket

An evident ticket is responded to more quickly. Include:

  • Your model and DSM version
  • The entire error message, verbatim.
  • What preceded the onset of the problem.
  • What models of your drive and how many installed.
  • The screenshots, in case the problem can be seen.

An example of a good opening line is in a hurry: DS923+, DSM 7.2, volume 1 presents Degraded, this morning following a power outage. Drive 2 is flagged. Screenshot attached. An engineer has in a single sentence known the model, the software, the symptom and the probable trigger.

As you wait, you may use our troubleshooting tips. There are numerous issues with simple solutions.

Plan around the weekday window

Free level operates 6 am to 5 pm Pacific. That's 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Central, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mountain. A late Friday ticket will wait until Monday, do not expect a four-hour response over the weekend. Get your files in early in the day, as much as possible.

What Faster Support Can't Fix: Why Backups Still Come First

Shielded VPN tunnel protecting a home router instead of exposing its admin panel.

You can be assisted by support engineers in a repair. They are unable to restore deleted, overwritten or ransomware locked files. A prompt reaction is only helpful in case you have a clean copy to recover.

Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) recommends that organizations store backups offline and encrypted and regularly test them. It advises that a lot of ransomware types seek out backups that can be accessed and destroy or encrypt them (Source: CISA #StopRansomware Guide).

Support can be thought of as a good mechanic and a backup as a spare key. The mechanic is superb when something goes wrong. However, when you lose the only key, no-one can make a duplicate out of nothing.

A sound strategy is easy:

  • Back up at least one copy off the NAS and out of your network.
  • Regular test a restore, not only the backup job.
  • Use your NAS as an extension of your pocket.

Conclusion

The owners of the Plus series are on the verge of receiving something truly beneficial: a 4-hour (guaranteed on weekdays) first response. It will not work on a Saturday night and will not restore deleted files. Get your NAS registered, get to know your ticket routine, and have a tested backup. Ready to take the greatest step?
