Black Friday emails are already filling your inbox, and the new Apple screen priced at just 299 will soon be on the American doorsteps. Your Wi-Fi is whining, your smart plugs know four languages, and the extra mini PC in the closet is glaring at you. That is the promise: true specifications, true prices and a definite choice to your house at the end of this read.
Quick answer: Apple HomeView is a sleek display costing $299 that is at its best when your entire family reside in iPhones. Home Assistant on a small home server is cheaper to start, is compatible with many more brands, and has your data on your own roof. Home Assistant as the brain, a screen such as HomeView as the face is best suited to most households.
Apple HomeView Price and Release Date: What $299 Gets You
On October 13, Apple announced HomeView and is currently taking pre-orders. It costs $299 and starts shipping Friday, November 13 (Source: Apple Newsroom). It is Friday the 13th, when you are superstitious. regretfully, Europe: it is not sold in the EU (Source: MacRumors). The complete spec sheet resides in the announcement of Apple.
The money purchases this:
- A 7-inch Liquid Retina screen on a domed speaker base with a tilt hinge (Source: 9to5Mac)
- A18 chip, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6.0 (announced by Apple) (Source: Apple announcement coverage)
- Matter standard and Thread support, enabling it to serve as a controller of accessories made by numerous brands (Source: HomeKit News)
- Silver, starlight, rose pink and space gray tabletop colors (Source: 9to5Mac)
The wall-mounted one is priced the same at $299 but the mount is an addition. Schneider Home offers an USB-C power mount at a price of 59.95 and the hard-wired AC mount at 79.95 (Source: 9to5Mac). It comes to around 359 to 379 before tax.
Software is the catch for now. Messages, FaceTime, Calendar, Reminders, Find My and Apple Home controls are included at launch, and the App Store is not present yet (Source: iDrop News). Imagine a highly attractive iPad which solely operates the Apple applications. Handy? Absolutely. A blank canvas? Not yet.

Apple HomeView Siri AI Features: Smart, but Leashed to Your iPhone
The star of the show is Siri AI. It is described by Apple as a more conversational Siri that knows more about the world in general and what is on the screen, as well as has more music discovery (Source: Apple Newsroom). It's in beta on HomeView software 27.2. At the moment it speaks English only, in the U.S., Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa, and the U.K. (Source: Apple; iClarified).
Now the leash. Individual responses, such as extracting information in your Messages or Calendar, require an iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence. Your face must be known and that phone must be close and unlocked recently (Source: Apple Newsroom). Even without the phone, you will receive general questions, natural back-and-forth and music suggestions (Source: MacRumors).
In simple terms: regarding personal answers, HomeView is a roomie, but forgets everything unless your phone is there.
The design of privacy is truly considerate. The device recognizes up to six people, each with a personal home screen (Source: MacRumors). Microphone and camera information are processed in the chip in the so-called 'Secure Exclaves'. The requests made by Siri are executed on the phone or the Apple Private Cloud Compute, in which Apple claims that no data is stored and that it is unreadable by anyone, including Apple (Source: Apple Newsroom).
Another fine print: there are features which consume an Apple server model with daily use restrictions, and expanded use will cost money in the future, according to Apple ( Source: Apple product page). The $299 is settled. The costs of heavy AI use are not what.

Apple HomeView vs Google Nest Hub: The Big-Tech Showdown
The other big-tech choice is Google and its pitch looks different. Gemini home is supplanting Google Assistant on Google speakers and displays (Source: The Gadgeteer). The original Nest Hub was approximately priced at 99 and Nest Hub Max at 229 (Source: BGR). The latest speaker offered by Google was released on June 25, 2026 and costs 99.99 ( Source: The Gadgeteer).
The catch is the subscription. Gemini Live and AI automations are the most sophisticated features of Google, which require Google Home Premium. Standard costs 10/month or 100/year. Advanced costs $20 a month or $200 a year (Source: MacRumors). The fundamental questions remain free (Source: MacRumors).
| HomeView | Nest Hub line | Home Assistant | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | $299 (wall mount extra) | About $99 to $229 | Free software; Green hub lists at $199 |
| Voice assistant | Siri AI (beta, English only) | Gemini for Home | Assist, plus optional add-ons |
| Paid AI tier | Apple says a fee tier is coming | Home Premium, $10 to $20 a month | None required |
| Matter support | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Best fit | iPhone households | Google account households | Any mix of brands |
Apple makes you pay now, and possibly higher in the future. Google charges on a monthly basis. Home Assistant bills you over the weekends.
Home Assistant Smart Home Hub Setup: How Hard Is It Really?
Home Assistant is an open-source, free software, and it is used on hardware you possess. It communicates with a vast number of devices without having to pass your lights through the cloud of another person (Source: Home Assistant). The installation is not as complicated as it is claimed.
What You Need to Get Started
There are three easy ways:
- Home Assistant Green: a pre-assembled plug-and-play box that has the software installed. In April 2026, Nabu Casa increased its list price to $199 because the cost of components almost doubled (Source: Matter Alpha). Prices in the streets are dependent on the seller.
- A spare mini PC or old laptop: free provided you have one. New to the idea? Our novice demystifier on what a home server is talks of the fundamentals in ordinary language.
- A Raspberry Pi: used to be a good deal, but the cost of Raspberry Pi continues to rise, and therefore cost out the case, power supply, and storage first.
Need voice control that will stay at home? The Home Assistant Voice Preview Edition is a tiny speaker puck costing 69 (Source: Home Assistant).
Your First Weekend, Step by Step
- Friday night: Connect your hub to the power and your router, and open your Home Assistant app.
- Saturday: Accept the devices that it has found on your network and then add Matter gadgets by scanning with your phone their QR codes.
- Sunday: Construct one automation such as turning on the porch light at sunset. Stop there. Victory is allowed.
- Later: Remote access safely, please. Mesh VPN is better than ports open on your router, and a comparison of Tailscale, NetBird, and Twingate will allow you to choose.
- Optional: HomeKit Bridge Integration: Add your devices to Apple Home (Source: Home Assistant documentation). Apple HomeView is said to control Apple Home accessories, thus the bridged devices should be visible there. Those are to be tested at launch.

Self-Hosted Smart Home vs Apple: Who Controls Your Data?
We should be just to Apple. In the case of a large-tech device, the privacy design of HomeView is robust, and Apple releases security research on Private Cloud Compute to enable external scrutiny ( Source: Apple Security Research).
The distinction lies in possession of keys. At Apple, your assistant, your accounts and your future AI pricing reside in the Apple ecosystem. In a self-hosted solution, your automations, camera data, and device logs are on a drive in your home. Local integrations continue to work even when your internet is down, so the porch light will still turn on at sunset.
There is a cost of self-hosting and it is called homework. You do updates, backups and security on your own. The U.S government cybersecurity agency recommends to replace default passwords and ensure that device software is up-to-date (Source: CISA). The two habits prevent the majority of errors made by beginners. Check our homelab security checklist at least once a quarter and you're further ahead of the majority of households.
This is the reward no one puts on a box. The server which drives your lights can drive other things as well. You can host your family photo library with Immich in the same machine, meaning you won’t need another cloud storage landlord.

Apple HomeView vs Home Assistant: Cost of Each Path After Year One
Half the story is the sticker prices. This is the first year, hardware alone, before you purchase a single bulb or sensor.
| Path | Hardware | Voice or screen | Year-one total |
|---|---|---|---|
| HomeView only | $299 | Built in | $299 ($359 to $379 with wall mount) |
| Home Assistant Green plus voice puck | $199 | $69 | $268 |
| Home Assistant on a spare PC plus voice puck | $0 if you own one | $69 | $69 |
| Hybrid: Green plus HomeView | $199 | $299 | $498 |
Hidden Costs to Watch
The thing that counts the most is your time: schedule it on a weekend or two. Include an external drive, and a battery backup, in case your power is intermittent. On the Apple side, a previous iPhone which cannot execute Apple Intelligence will lock the personal features and excessive usage of cloud AI can be charged in the future.
Who Should Buy What
- Choose HomeView when all the members of your homestead are iPhones, you need FaceTime on your kitchen counter, and you would prefer never to look at a settings menu.
- Select Home Assistant when you have a combination of brands, you are concerned about where your data is stored, or when you enjoy assembling objects.
- Take your choice between an elegant display to the family, and a pliable intellect to the inventor in the home. That's probably you.

Conclusion
HomeView is a pleasant screen whose voice is clever on a leash to your iPhone. Home Assistant is the brain that integrates with almost everything, is cheaper to begin with, and maintains your habits at home. Choose one (server) in case you have to. Home Assistant can think and the screen can be pretty: afford both. Ready to start? Next, read the home assistant set up guide, and your initial automation can be up by Sunday night.
